For Astrium Satellites in Munich/Ottobrunn in within the business division "Earth Observation Navigation & Science" within the area "ENS Germany / Optical Instruments" for the department "Optical Design & Performance" we are looking for a Senior Optical Designer (m/f).
To consult the Optical Instrument Design & Performance team as well as the System Engineering & Technologies team with optical design expertise for instruments throughout the entire product live cycle (technology studies and Phase A to E) in questions of manufacturability, material selection, space compatibility, costs and technological readiness. The position requires a comprehensive background in optical design and the related opto-mechanical aspects of optical instruments, preferably for space applications. A comprehensive knowledge of supplier capabilities and resources as well as a detailed knowledge of optical instruments operating in space are appreciated in this function. Reporting to the head of Optical Instrument Design and Performance in Germany.
Tasks
- To create optical designs and concepts for optical instruments in space, comprising spectrometers interferometers, high resolution spectral cameras and LIDAR systems
- To provide proactively the necessary level of opto-mechanical/thermal design and engineering consultancy, to drive concept trade-offs and feasibility analyses, considering manufacturability, alignment and accuracy aspects, costs and/or procurement sources of components/equipments, space compatibility and technological readiness
- To assure required level of synthesis and documentation/presentation of instrument design and trade-offs
- To establish and maintain a database with supplier/manufacturing data /technical, cost and schedule) and to provide and maintain knowledge of optical instruments operating in space and OGSE
- To coordinate with Optical Instrument System Engineering and AIV & Infrastructure teams as well as with the Mechanical/Thermal Instrument Architects at all relevant sites and with relevant projects
Skills
- Degree in optical engineering or an equivalent discipline (e.g. physics) plus good understanding of design and the related opto-mechanical aspects
- Not less than 5 years experience in the field of optical instruments, preferably in space
- Dedicated expertise in optical instrument hardware and related engineering including AIV/AIT
- Broad experience in optical design of instruments (Code V, Zemax, ASAP, FRED)
- Good interpersonal skills, good communication and convincing presentation capability
- Openness and flexibility; customer and results orientation
- Good knowledge of detectors and optical instruments, industrial capabilities for procurement of optical components, readiness level of technologies and actual technology developments related to optical instruments
- Languages: English fluently
